Vice Chancellor of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Professor Adeniyi Gbadegesin has identified exportation of the knowledge of Science and the manipulation of Biological Science facts as panacea to the problem of tropical countries.
He spoke on Wednesday at the opening ceremony of the 14th Annual Conference and General meeting of the Nigerian Society for Experimental Biology (NISEB) holding at the institution.
Explaining that many food shortage problems facing Africa are on account of low crop yield occasioned by low precipitation as a result of the tropical region of the continent, Gbadegesin said “the solution to the condition of the tropical countries lies in the exploitation of the knowledge of science and the manipulation of Biological Science facts”.
He admonished NISEB to rise up to the occasion in order to nip the invading famine threatening Africa in the bud.
The guest lecturer and Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University to Prof. Funsho Obafunwa in his lecture titled, “Qualitative Scientific Research: A Catalyst for Sustainable Transformation” pointed out that there are opportunities for quality scientific research to solve the problems of power, food and well being of the country.
He however regretted that the Nigerian political climate is inimical to the successful conduct of competitive quality research.
According to him, Nigeria can compete favorably with other researchers around the globe if Nigerian academics can do away with unnecessary and unwanted strikes, lock outs and disruption of academic calendar.
Earlier in her address, the national president of NISEB, Prof. (Mrs.) Joy Okpuzor thanked the University authorities for accepting to host the conference.
